Quick Fashion Fix

By South Philly Fashionista

I swear I’m not blowing you guys off, it’s just been a crazy busy week and I have plans with my sweetie tonight and not much time. But I wanted to share with you a quick fashion fix I am proud of pulling off. Maybe it’ll help you the next time you find yourself in an ensemble that needs a slight adjustment.

A couple of weeks ago, I was headed in to center city for a cocktail reception and figured I’d run a few in-town errands beforehand. I bundled up with multiple layers to fend off the cold and snow and hopped the Broad St. line. I hit Starbucks for a power-latte, stopped at Staples to pick-up a new iPod cover for my sweetie, popped in to Liberty Travel to meet with our travel agent. By the time I went to Aveda to pick-up some hand cream, I was sweating – hard. Traveling between the frigid temperatures and sauna-like retailers was making me melt and fast.

Already at Liberty Place, I went to use the restroom and freshen up before the event. I took my coat off, fanned my face a little, even took off a layer of socks, but I was still hot. Clearly, the long-sleeved black shirt I had on under my grey sweater had not been a wise choice.

I only had 20 minutes before my reception, which was standing room only, so I didn’t want to change my outfit completely and be carrying a lot of bags. I also didn’t want to spend a ton of money. I know more than one woman who has ended up with an expensive piece she never wore again as result of this kind of situation.

I gathered my things and headed over to Anne Taylor Loft and grabbed every black shirt they had (starting with the sale section of course). My sweater had a tricky neckline and I tried on a few clearance-rack tops that didn’t work. The simple black tank, however, was perfect and just $14. I asked the girl in the fitting room if I could wear it out and she said yes. I pulled the tag out so she could scan it and noticed I could get this tank, available in a multitude of colors, for $10 if I bought a second. Using my best girl-math skills I, of course, picked up another one in lavender.

I put my long-sleeved shirt and second tank in my tiny bag and hit the street feeling cool and confident and very budget-conscious! No one at the event would ever have known I was a hot-mess a mere 30 minutes beforehand.

While there’s not an Anne Taylor Loft on any corner, if you live in a city or near a strip mall, you can find a quick, creative solution to any questionable clothing choice without spending a ton of money. As long as you’re not running late, that is, but that’s another blog post altogether. ;)

Happy shopping!
