Wedding Update 3.10

By South Philly Fashionista

I know it’s been a while since I published a Wedding Wednesday post. We hit a serious snag in our planning and I was a little more than disheartened. Let me catch you up.

You see, I had gone to our travel agent in Feb. and told her we were ready to book with one of the resorts in Tulum, Mexico she had recommended. But you know travel agents and of course, she had a new recommendation in Riviera Cancun. I checked it out and let me tell you, it looked hot. It turned out they were ready to offer us an even better rate than the place we originally chose. We were all ready to go in and sign the papers when I got an email from the TA saying they didn’t have any weddings available for the entire month of November.

I’m not going to lie to you, I was crushed. She had really done her job of selling me on this place and I was having a hard time reconciling the idea of going back to the original destination. As I groaned and moaned to myself, I heard my yoga teacher’s voice in my head, as I so often do, “Svaha,” she said, “So, what?”

“Yeah,” I thought, “I know. But the second resort has plunge pools in almost every room category!! And it was brand-spanking-new! And …” I looked up at our wall calendar. I chose the calendar this year specifically to inspire my fiance, “National Geographic: Mexico.” You know what this month’s picture is: Tulum. “Maybe that’s where we were meant to get married?” I thought.

I had to wait for my sweetie to get home for a consultation. I let him settle in from work a little before I broached the subject. He’s basically interested in just the bottom-line: “So, what does this mean to us?” he asks me, “We go back to the original resort? Find a new one?”

“Well ….” I started. “You know what?” he answered, “I honestly don’t care. I’m sure whatever you choose will be beautiful, honey. It’s totally up to you.” Now, there was a time when I would have hated getting this kind of answer from my partner. Oh to be young and stupid! I now relish this kind of statement, but I digress.

I decided to have the travel agent price two resorts, including our initial pick and it turned out she couldn’t even get in touch with anyone at the other alternative. I definitely don’t want to have any problems getting in touch with someone while I am planning so that pretty much settled it. Or so I thought.

Snag number 2 was that they didn’t have any weddings open on the actual date we preferred, which was a Sat. They did, however, have the Friday prior available at noon. “Ugh! Does it have to be noon?!?!?” I fussed again. That is the one time of day I really didn’t want to do. We have some older relatives attending and I just think they will melt in the midday Mexico sun, not to mention my make-up.

I asked about Sunday. They don’t do weddings on Sunday. There was a 2pm slot open on Thursday. Was it too much to ask? I began phone calls and continued the internal debate eventually to decide that if people were willing to travel to Mexico for our wedding, they would likely be ok with coming one day earlier.

So, I told the TA that’s what we would do. Unfortunately, I delivered this message the day her office was undergoing renovations and it didn’t get through until late in the afternoon. She was as eager as I was to finalize the date, but for some reason, she wasn’t getting the forms that the resort was trying to fax her. Early in the evening she got the form by email and then sent it over to me.

This morning, I tried to print it only to find our printer doing one of its many annoying tricks. It displays this weird error message and then I have to have my honey open it up in back and push some kind of reset button inside. I had to leave for yoga, but he promised to take care of it before he left for work. I came home and found a note that the usual fix didn’t work and he would have to look at it later.

O … M… G!!! Clearly, there was some kind of conspiracy going on.

I couldn’t print the form. The TA said I could just fill it out online and send it back to her, so I set forth to do so. But even that had to be a challenge!! The document wouldn’t let me insert any text. I had to try converting it to several different formats before I was finally able to fill the freaking thing out.

But, I did. And I sent it back to the agency and we should be all set (I type while holding my breath!)

PS – I also tried on some dresses this week and may have found the one! But, I’m saving that for next week’s post. ;)
