My stylist – Charlie Potje, owner of Charlie Salon – has done it again. He’s turned me on to another can’t-live-without product: Blowpro Ready Set Blow. Developed and tested by Blow, New York’s premier blow dry bar, it actually speeds up drying time while it primes and smooths hair.

The manufacturer says it’s the formula’s exclusive protein blend that is simultaneously nourishing and weightless. Micro-heat conducting polymers optimize your blow dryer’s heat, reducing your hair’s exposure, resulting in less stress and damage, no matter your hair type. The addition of Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) and Triticum Vulgare (wheat protein) leaves hair revitalized. Bonus: all Blowpro products are made without sulfates, parabens or sodium chloride and are compatible with keratin-treated hair.

How to use: rub a small amount (nickel size for fine to medium hair, quarter size for coarse) between your palms to emulsify the products, then rake hands through hair, concentrating on the ends and outer layers. Then, set about your normal routine. For the best results, point the blow dry nozzle down as you dry and be sure to ventilate steamy bathrooms before styling to ward off frizz.

Blowpro has literally cut my morning styling time in half and leaves me with a lasting look that I don’t have to touch up before heading out for the night. Try it once and I guarantee you’ll be hooked just like me. At this point, I’m starting to wonder if Charlie is my stylist or my dealer. For the product junkie in me, it’s a win-win.

The sheer volume of the Philadelphia restaurant scene is overwhelming these days. It’s great to have so many incredible culinary choices, but in the search for the next new hot spot, it’s easy to forget some longstanding legends.

Last week, I attended a media tasting at Serrano in Old City. I have to admit, I’ve been before and enjoyed it and can’t, for the life of me, figure out why I haven’t been back. The spring menu preview offered the perfect chance to get reacquainted with this hidden gem. Tucked in on Second St. under the Tin Angel venue, Serrano has been a neighborhood staple for more than a quarter century. The addition of Executive Chef Gina Rodriguez has given birth to a revamped menu, marrying the restaurant’s old world feel with new signature creations.

We kicked off the evening with some signature drinks, created by owner Donal McCoy, using his extensive education of bourbons, whiskeys and classic cocktails that began when he started bartending at the age of 15. His expertise is evident in the recently revamped spirits menu. In particular, the wines paired with our meal were simply perfect.

Seasonal favorites like steamed mussels, heirloom tomato salad and spring flatbread (changes daily) set the scene for our spring feast. Chef Rodriguez also shared with us starters of shrimp mousse, corn fritters with cayenne honey and a baby spinach salad topped with bits of sliced watermelon and bleu cheese vinaigrette. Diners were offered a choice of lamb, scallops or vegetable curry for the main course. My date and I shared the latter two courses and both were light and lovely, perfect for the spring season. And while I typically shy away from lamb, the presentation of Guiness-braised meat, served in a corn crepe with sweet pea tendrils and drizzled with a Dijon demi-glace was so eye-catching, I nearly changed my order.

The dinner was dynamite from start to finish, but what most stands out to me about Serrano is the easy-going yet elegant atmosphere. The space is cozy enough to make diners feel at home, yet chic enough to impress your out-of-town guests. I’m of the opinion that fine food can be made fantastic if enjoyed in the right company. Sincere kudos to PR Professional Kory Aversa as well, who not only organized the event and put me on the guest list, but used his killer people skills to pair us with some amazing table mates who made the experience all the more special. Stop by and check it out Serrano’s new flavor with some of your favorite dining companions.

Cheers!

Despite the groundhog’s prediction, Spring is clearly toying with us here in the Northeast. It’s the second day of the season and this morning, there was snow on the ground. I’m sick of the grey and gloom and more than ready for flower beds to pop with bright buds again.

One company who will never toy with us introduced a new line of floral-inspired jewelry to get us in the mood for Spring, regardless of what the weather is outside. This month, Tiffany & Co. rolled out Paloma’s Olive Leaf, a collection inspired by the olive branch as a symbol of peace and abundance.

Credit: Tiffany & Co.

Designer Paloma Picasso drew inspiration from the olive groves around her home in Morocco. Also, “Paloma means dove in Spanish,” says Picasso. The image of a dove carrying an olive branch is an internationally recognized symbol for peace. “The jewelry I’ve created pays tribute to both the messenger’s noble mission and gardens as a refuge of peace and tranquility,” she explains.

For this collection, the designer placed colorful gemstones amongst leafy branches of gold and silver. Tiffany artisans hand cut and set each stone for maximum brilliance. The result is a group of pieces that dazzle in the light like leaves on a summer breeze.

Paloma’s Olive Leaf includes a bib necklace entwining tender leaves and stems, pendant necklaces in gold or silver, one-of-a-kind rings composed of rubellite, green peridot, white gold and diamonds, and delicate drop earrings anchored by sparkling leaves. My favorite, though, is the intricately-woven golden cuff. The design echoes the olive wreath, used as a crown in ancient times.

Paloma Picasso introduced her first collection for Tiffany & Co. in 1980. She continues to create lively and visually appealing jewels for the world’s premier jeweler.

I try not to judge. I really do. But I’ve been seeing some fashion-crimes in Philly of late that just  make me crazy! Perhaps the masses just need a bit of education? Let’s start with one of my biggest pet peeves that seem to be running rampant right now.

We’ll start with an introduction: this is a temporary stitch.

These threads are put in place by the manufacturer to keep pieces of fabric in place. This prevents them from getting caught, folded or wrinkled in transit and prior to purchase. You’ll see them most commonly on the split hem of a dress, skirt or jacket.

Here’s the thing, though: you’re supposed to REMOVE them before wearing said garment! I’m seeing countless people on the streets these days with that temporary stitch intact. Yesterday, I saw a girl on the subway with a gorgeous swing coat that looked a mess because all of the temporary stitching was left in place, gathering the many folds of the garment together and destroying the flouncing effect the designer intended.

Look at the difference between the rest of the stitching on the item and that little X. The thread is almost always in a contrasting color to the garment and typically sits atop the fabric, making no attempt to hide in a seam. Half the time, it will pull away from the fabric so easily that you don’t even need a blade. Manufacturers make it so abundantly clear that this stitch doesn’t match the others, I’m confounded as to why someone would leave it in place.

For the most part, I’d taken it as simple laziness or complacency, but I’m beginning to think it’s intentional. Last week, we attempted to use a new dry cleaner (always risky). Unfortunately, this would be our first and last trip to this establishment. Not only did they staple a tag to the middle of my silk Marc Jacobs, but they reapplied the temporary stitching onto one of my dresses! Only, this stitch was made so tightly, it was clearly meant to be permanent.

There was a time when this stitch was necessary, but it’s not any time after the garment is purchased. After you take your purchase home, it’s time to cut the cord, literally.

Over the weekend, I popped in to see a friend whose son I had never met. So obsessed was the child with showing me his every toy, his father remarked he’d no idea what had gotten into him. I had to sheepishly admit it’s not the first time I have had this kind of influence over a little boy. My husband calls it the blonde effect. It’s Darwinian. Lighter hair color evolved as a trait to attract the opposite sex. It was less common, so it stood out.

But we’ve been finding ways to get what DNA didn’t give us for centuries. Even my own shade of blonde wouldn’t be quite as brilliant as in my youth if it weren’t for some professional assistance. While not every hair type and complexion is right for full-on platinum, “In the dead of winter, lightening your hair a shade or two can do miracles for your outlook and your mood,” says Andre Richard Baldini, owner of Andre Richard Salon.

To that end, the salon will host a Blonde Ambition, an all day blonding event, this Thursday, February 28. Clients both new and old will receive 20% all lightening services while enjoying light refreshments. Any kind of lightening (single-process color, ombre or highlights) is included.

Visit www.andrerichardsalon.com to book your appointment. “Regardless of your texture or length,” Baldini says, “there’s a little ‘blonde’ in everyone.”

Hollywood’s most glamorous night is almost upon us: this Sunday marks the 85th Annual Academy Awards. It’s Oscar night! And Philly will be rolling out its own red carpet again this year for the 2nd Annual Red Carpet Party. Philadelphia Style editor Kristin Detterline and PhillyStreetStyle.com editor Jimmy Contreras will host the festivities at the Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia’s 10 Arts Lounge. The stylish duo will offer up sassy, unedited red carpet commentary while guests watch their favorite stars arrive on big screens around the soaring rotunda.

“The Oscar red carpet is one of the most-watched, and most elegant events in Hollywood,” says Contreras. “Honestly, what better place take all of that glamor in than with a fashionable crowd of your friends in the lobby of The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia?” Having attended last year’s inaugural event, I can attest that it’s a great way to experience the show. Watching the red carpet in my cocktail dress, sipping champagne made me almost feel I was there, and I made some fabulous new friends to boot.

Last year's "best dressed couple," Lex and Elizabeth Terenchin, stole the show!

The event begins at 6pm with complimentary cocktails made with Tito’s handmade vodka and Casamingos tequila (the new spirit from George Clooney and Cindy Crawford making its PA debut that night), lite fare from Chef Nathan Volz and a dessert bar from Whipped Bake Shop, followed by $8 drink specials during the live screening of the Oscar awards ceremony at 7pm. Also on the books is a fashion presentation from Saks Fifth Avenue.

Attendees should dress to impress as Contreras and Detterline will present awards of their own for best dressed lady, gentleman and couple. Prizes include dinner for two at 10 Arts, a Rachel D’Ambra spa gift certificate and an overnight stay at the Ritz. But you don’t have to win to go home with a gift bag filled with scarves and necklaces from the new Anne Klein flagship store on Walnut St., swag from Philly-filmed and Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook, Neuro beverages and UBER black cards. UBER will also offer new users a free ride to the event that night. Just use code RITZREDCARPET with your smartphone app and you’re transportation will be comped (up to $20).

The party is free for those over the age of 21, but you must RSVP by 5pm Thursday! Email Samantha@vlahospr.com or call 267-684-0223.

A little over a decade ago, I packed up my meager 20-something suburban belongings and moved into my first apartment in South Philly. A one-bedroom apartment a few blocks from East Passyunk Avenue, then a shell of its past and present glory, is where I fell in love with this city. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one who saw the potential in this little stretch of road. Today’s EPA is home to 150 bustling shops, salons and saloons, somehow retaining its old world charm.

The recently restored "Singing Fountain" of East Passyunk Ave.

This is why I’m super excited and proud to tell you that the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District is holding its first ever restaurant week! Between Sunday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 2, the folks behind 21 of Zagat’s “Food Neighborhood of the Year” will serve up three course brunch, lunch and dinner menus at bargain prices. The area’s top chefs are offering special off-menu items in addition to their signature dishes with some participants providing drink pairings, add-on specials and extended hours. “Our award-winning chefs will wow diners with seasonal cuisine, experimental dishes, neighborhood favorites and signature specialties,” says Renee Gillinger, EPABID Executive Director. “[EPA] Restaurant Week celebrates the amazing talent that makes our dining scene so unique.”

It looks like just about every restaurant on the Avenue is taking part:

Reservations are open now, but they’re filling up fast, so get on it! Full menus and additional details can be found at www.eastpassyunkrestaurantweek.com

I have mentioned before that I’m not a sports fan. I’ve tried. I really have. I grew up with a crumb of interest in baseball, but an over-obsessed ex killed it for me. My husband has been able to explain football well enough to me that I understand it, but I tend to get distracted during. Hockey and basketball are cool, but I am easily distracted during. It’s just not my thing.

Be that as it may, I do enjoy going to the occasional game. It’s more about the experience at that point. I like the camaraderie, the people watching, oh, and of course, the oft associated booze. Last summer, we had a company outing to a Phillies game. While I didn’t have any team apparel, I did sport team colors – beachy crop pants, Michael Korrs tank & wedge sandals. Adorbs, anyway – a colleague informed me this was not sufficient. She said I needed to have something that specifically indicated I was routing for the home team, which I was. However, let’s be honest. There’s no way I am spending money on a Phillies/Eagles/Flyers jersey that could go towards a new pair of shoes just to wear to the sporadic games I attend. So, what’s a proper Philly girl to do?

Philly Skyscraper Tee: the four tallest city buildings, constructed of its different neighborhoods.Answer: Aphillyated Apparel! The owners graciously sent me a selection of shirts a few weeks ago and that delivery was the highlight of my day. Not only do the tees pop with Philly funkiness, they are super soft and perfectly fitted. Inspired by urban culture, Aphillyated’s line of t-shirt, tanks, hoodies and hats capture the edgy essence of the city of this unique city.

Founded in May, 2010 by brothers Nicholas and Vincent Sannuti, Aphillyated’s designs bring to life a diverse city with a distinguished history and a sense of humor. The Sannuti brothers’ goal in creating the brand was to produce apparel that incorporated their passion for Philadelphia. Mission accomplished gentlemen! Example: the Philly Skyscraper Tee above, featuring the city’s four tallest buildings constructed of its myriad neighborhoods. So glad I finally have something fashion forward I can appropriately wear to my next sporty engagement (or just about anywhere else).

PS: For my friends who are a little more athletically inclined, Aphillyated’s got you covered with an array of Philly fan themed goods as well.

Show ya love!
