Easy Rider

It’s no secret that traipsing around this great city of ours is one of my favorite past times. However, dealing with the cab drivers is not. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been stuck on a corner searching for that elusive taxi; at closing time, in the pouring rain or in a neighborhood outside of center city. Or, how about when you realize you spent all your cash and all you have is a credit card and you just KNOW the driver is going to give you a hard time about your method of payment?

Lucky for us, Uber just launched in Philly! This service is changing the landscape of transportation across the country (currently in 9 cities and counting) and now has landed in our own backyard. Simply press a button on your phone and a car will be there to pick you up at your designated location. Uber will dispatch their nearest driver and send you a text with the estimated arrival time and again when your ride has arrived. Hop in the sleek black car, tell the driver where you want to go and you’re off. Best of all, there’s no need to check your stash of cash. Your credit card is on file with Uber and they’ll simply charge the fare once you’re ride is over, even the tip is included.

Just like a cab, prices start with a base fare and then charge depending on speed (over 11mph, the charge is by distance, under 11mph, you’re charged a time fee.) An app is available for most phones, or you can simply log on to the Uber website and text your pickup address. Best of all, the launch coincides with the first Center City Sips tonight and Uber will be offering free rides from CCS locations. It’s a great chance to try out the service, not to mention, impress the hell out of your friends.
